JANUARY 16 - FEBRUARY 14, 2025
Proliferation, 2025. Paper, Prints of Charcoal Drawing, Velcro, 9.4 x 8.3 feet
In my recent work, I use the tactile nature of charcoal to understand the complexities between life and death, the conscious and subconscious, and the microcosm and macrocosm; refining my understanding of self and us.
I have experimented with different textures and intensities of charcoal to create complex patterns while also implementing various levels of depth. Playing with the dark, velvety black tint to engulf the eye in the patterns’ complexities and the physical depth to encourage an interaction between the patterns and their environment.
I consider depth on multiple levels of my work; tying it in by using extensive layers, shading, and contrast on a 2D level. Then, I push this depth further by exploring various ways of physically constructing the piece off of the wall. This has fueled my interest in taking up space. Crafting collages that extend on and off of its supporting surfaces. This dual engagement of encompassing space physically through expansion and mentally through intricate visual representation, allows me to create a deeper sense of immersion.
Cotys Winston-Sandefur, born and raised in Oakland CA, creates work that reflects her belief in the transformative power of art and the subconscious. She often uses charcoal and collage to explore themes of nature, spirituality, and the human experience through pattern. She received her BA in Art from the University of California, Davis, and is expected to receive her MFA from Maharishi International University in the winter of 2024. She has exhibited her work nationally at venues like Oak Park Art Gallery in Chicago IL, The Consulate General of Mexico in Los Angeles CA, and the Manetti Shrem Museum of Art in Davis CA.
